Turning the Kitchen into a Peaceful Retreat From the World

October 27, 2021 //  by admin

“My guiding design principle is happiness. When I am home, I want to be happy. I don’t want to be confronted with stressful news. I don’t want to see the ugliness of the world. My home is my safe place away from everything, and the kitchen is where I go to enjoy myself.” Joanne is in the midst of renovating her Newton kitchen, and is pretty clear that while it’s important that she can easily prepare delicious meals in her new space, she also wants a room that’s beautifully calm and serene.

Creating a kitchen that is a peaceful retreat from the world is a common design request. Let’s talk about what’s involved, in our experience as Newton kitchen designers, in achieving that goal.

#1: A Visually Distinct Space

The idea of a retreat implies some degree of separation from the rest of the world. That doesn’t mean you have to have a walled-in kitchen. Experienced kitchen designers are adept at creating visually distinct spaces, even within open floor plan homes. The use of green plants as living dividers is very on point as part of the modern organic design trend.

#2: Disconnect from Stress

Lower stress levels by banishing upsetting media from the room. If you like to have a tv on for background noise, stream some soothing content. Some homeowners prefer to eliminate screens entirely, and use music to set the tone for the space.

#3: Proactively Choose Calm

Your Newton kitchen design design company can help you choose calming colors and materials for your kitchen. Natural materials, including stone and bamboo, are top choices for many right now, as are color schemes in the blue and green family. Minimalist design, with clean lines, simple or no hardware, and smooth surfaces, helps quiet the mood and soothe anxiety.

#4: Smart Work Flow

Serenity is achieved by eliminating needless stress. Working with a kitchen designer to create a smart work flow means never having to interrupt what you’re doing to search for a utensil, pan, or ingredient. Having a place for everything makes it simple to do everything you want in the kitchen without any stress.

#5: Easy Clean Surfaces

Never stress about keeping the countertops pristine. Choosing high quality, long lasting, easy clean surfaces, particularly for workspace countertops and within high traffic areas of the kitchen, to keep your work load small and your enjoyment level high.
