Do You Need an In-Law Suite?

October 23, 2023 //  by admin

So the decision has been made that your parents (or your spouse’s parents) are going to live in the family home. Making that decision happens for a number of reasons, with the most common being a desire to have grandparents close by the children, medical or care needs, or financial concerns. But once the decision has been made, it’s time to figure out how are you going to implement it.

What is an In-Law Suite?

Throughout this article, we’re going to be talking about the pros and cons of an in-law suite. So it helps to know what an in-law suite is. Generally, an in-law suite is an addition or converted space that serves as a self-contained living space for one or two people. An in-law suite generally includes a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and small living area. An in-law suite may or may not have a separate entrance.

Privacy Helps Maintain Family Happiness

The happiest families are those where everyone has their own space. Moving in – even with beloved children and grandchildren – is a big adjustment for parents who have had their own homes for many years. At the same time, those children and grandchildren are also going through a big adjustment that comes with having one or two more family members always around.

It’s helpful to some separate spaces. In families with young, active children, the noise and chaos level can be a bit much at times. Having an in-law suite full of peace and quiet is a wonderful option. That privacy is also valuable for parents who want to maintain their dignity while still requiring some degree of care.

Long Term Impacts of Having an In-Law Suite Added to the Home

While having an in-law suite added to your Needham home may be the best solution while your parents or in-laws are living with you, what happens when that’s no longer the case? Real estate experts agree that the in-law suite adds significant value to your home. Additionally, many households are seeing adult children choosing to live with their parents. The in-law suite can be a smart housing solution that promotes family happiness.
