Every year, Realtor.com surveys homeowners from all across the country to determine which home renovation jobs have proven to be most satisfying in terms of increasing the homeowner’s pleasure in their home as well as recouping the financial investment. The best home renovations add to the appeal of the home and can boost the home’s selling price.
Some of the best performing renovations on the list are relatively minor upgrades – replacing the garage door cinched the #1 spot because it’s both affordable and can have a dramatic affect on curb appeal. Kitchen renovations were divided into two categories, split by cost: minor kitchen upgrades proved to be slightly more satisfying and a better return on financial investment than major kitchen renovations. That being said, the value of a kitchen renovation goes up based on the age of the kitchen being upgraded. If it’s been 15+ years since your last kitchen remodel, you’ll realize more return on your investment than someone who is renovating a kitchen that’s been upgraded more recently.
Bathroom upgrades continue to be a consistently satisfying upgrade. We’ve done many of these jobs in the Hopkinton and Weston area, and find they fall into two categories: renovating the family bathroom to reflect the changing needs of the family as the kids get older, and updating the master bathroom, often as part of a larger master bedroom suite renovation or addition.
Finally, in terms of homeowner satisfaction and return on investment, it’s really hard to beat finishing the basement. For many families, basements are chronically underutilized space. A lot of square footage gets wasted. Working with your Hopkinton building contractor, you can develop a plan that makes better use of your basement. Finished basements can be used as workout rooms, home offices, smart storage spaces, or, increasingly, finished into apartments for adult children.
