If you’re starting to plan your 2023 home renovation projects and are considering what upgrades make the most sense for your property, consider the bathroom. Even though the bathroom is one of the most frequently used rooms in the home, it doesn’t get upgraded all that often. In some households, the same toilets, sinks, and showers have been in place for more than twenty years.
Is it time to renovate the bathroom? If you’re in love with how your bathroom currently looks and functions, then the answer is obviously no. But if you haven’t really thought about the bathroom objectively and critically in a while, you might not know how well the space is actually performing for you. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to help you decide if the bathroom needs upgrading or is fine as it is:
Is anything broken?
This sounds like a ridiculous question, but one thing we’ve learned in our years of kitchen and bath remodeling is sometimes people just get in the habit of living with something broken. For example, maybe the toilet’s always had a little leak back there or the shower door only closes properly if you lift and pull it just so. Make a note of what needs fixing to help you decide if it’s time to renovate.
How old are the things in your bathroom?
There are people who will tell you a toilet should last more than 100 years. And that may be true, especially with a higher quality porcelain toilet. But there are a lot of cheap mass-produced toilets that start showing their age pretty badly in as little as 15 years. Sinks weather the years better, but the issue there is often that the style is no longer appealing. Bathtubs the useful life really depends on what the tub is made of. A fiberglass tub is expected to last only ten years, while acrylic tubs hang on closer to 30 years and cast iron more than 50.
Do you enjoy the way the bathroom looks?
The way the bathroom looks right now is the way the bathroom is going to look unless you make some changes. Do you enjoy the way your bathroom looks? Do you enjoy being in that space? Do you feel comfortable in the bathroom? The answers to these questions all matter as you decide whether or not it’s time to upgrade the bathroom.
