What is Wellness Design & How Will It Impact Your Kitchen Addition?

June 15, 2021 //  by admin

If you’re in the early stages of planning your new kitchen addition, you may have seen the term Wellness Design popping up. In this post, we’re going to explain what wellness design is, and how it may impact your new kitchen addition.

What is Wellness Design?

Architectural Digest explains that wellness design involves involves lighting, materials, air and sound quality, neutral color palettes, biophilic design &, greenery, and outdoor-indoor space integration. Each item on this list is approached in a way to promote comfortable, healthy living.

The lighting in a kitchen addition is critically important. As kitchen addition builders in Hingham, MA, one of the things we hear all of the time is that people want a light, open, airy kitchen. Factoring in the wellness component includes making sure there’s plenty of windows for natural light, as well as carefully selected lighting that provides sufficient illumination for food prep and other tasks as well as illuminating the room. Your Hingham kitchen designer can help you choose lighting in the right color and intensity to make your new addition pleasant and healthy to be in.

In terms of materials, wellness design can cover everything from flooring to fixtures to paints and finishes. What’s often of concern here is the essential nature of the materials themselves, including whether they’re sustainably sourced and what, if any contribution they make to the air and sound quality of the room. Air and sound quality are often overtly addressed as part of wellness design, with air filtration systems and more.

Neutral-color palettes don’t necessarily mean natural wood and lots of beige, so don’t freak out if that’s not your thing. Wellness design does take into account the emotional impact color has on the lived experience of the people who occupy the space, minimizing contrasts and jarring patterns to achieve a restful, productive room.

Outdoor living was definitely one of 2020’s biggest design trends. That’s the biophilic design & greenery portion of wellness design, which prioritizes bringing plants indoors and embracing outdoor dining and entertaining options as part of kitchen addition planning.

Have questions? Want to get started planning your 2022 kitchen addition now? Help is here.
