“My husband and I both come from families that didn’t have a lot of stability,” Zoe said. “My father was in the military, and you know what that means: frequent moves and never feeling truly settled anywhere. And my husband’s family was in the opposite boat: it was his mother’s career as an entertainer and performer that had them travelling. So now that we’re creating a home together, we want to emphasize all those things we didn’t have as kids: stability, permanence, a true forever home.”
Classic Design, Quality Materials, Exceptional Craftsmanship: The Starting Point
“When you’re building a custom home, it’s important to work with a design/build firm,” Zoe explained. “That way you’re developing and articulating your custom home design with the people who are actually involved in building it. We were able to have the conversations about important things like wanting the kids – who aren’t even conceived yet! – to feel like the home had been there for generations and would be there for generations more.”
“We went with a very classic, traditional floorplan, while adding some touches that made the house distinctly our own space,” Zoe said. “My husband’s workshop takes up the whole lower floor of the house. I can look forward to seeing our kids working on carpentry projects with him. And we’ve brought our love of nature and the outdoors into the entire design. Our Wayland home builders really went above and beyond to create sunny, airy rooms with fantastic views.”
“What makes our home custom in a lot of ways is the materials selection. I wanted to make sure we were using sustainable, ethical materials to create our home. That did limit our options in some ways but in others it truly deepened our connection to this house. Every aspect was chosen with care and intention. It’s a very different process than just flipping through a book of floor plans and saying Oh, this one.”
