If you’re in the process of having a custom home built, or you know you’d like to have a home built for you in the future, here is one simple step that can help you enjoy a greater level of satisfaction from your new home. This step is called visualization. Visualization is easy to do and is absolutely free.
What is Visualization?
Visualization is a focused form of imagining. Let’s say you’re looking at floorplans for custom homes, trying to decide which one is right for you and your family.
When you’re looking at a specific plan, try this exercise:
Imagine you’ve had a typical day at work. You’ve just gotten home – maybe you have a couple of kids with you, or you picked up your canine companion from Doggie Daycare – and it’s time to get some dinner. Where do you park your car? Where do you enter the house?
Do you envision yourself walking into the kitchen? A mudroom? A grand foyer? There’s no right or wrong answer to these questions. It’s much more about envisioning yourself in the space being proposed and seeing how that vision aligns with how you like to live your life.
Plans are customizable, which means that if you’re concerned a room will be too dark for your personal preferences, you can have additional windows added. Conversely, if the number and location of windows in a particular room makes you feel uncomfortable and overexposed, the plan can be customized with fewer or smaller windows.

It is always better to make changes to a plan before the building starts. This is why visualization is such a powerful tool. The more time you spend with a plan thinking through and imagining what it would be like for you and your family to be in that space, the greater the chances are that you’ll think of refinements or alterations to the floorplan that make your home distinctly, beautifully yours.
