“For the longest time, I was driving myself crazy trying to optimize my bathroom storage,” Jodie said. “We’re talking bespoke cabinetry for the towels, and then a vanity just full of drawers, and still I’m struggling to find a place to put the toilet paper and cleaning supplies.”
When her son brought his college girlfriend home, she started talking to Jodie about her ongoing renovation project. “And she said something that absolutely blew my mind,” Jodie said. “She asked do you really need all of this stuff, and do you really need it all in this small little room?”
“After a lifetime of putting things in a certain place, it’s just a habit,” Jodie said. “I never, ever stopped to think if this bathroom was the best place to keep extra towels and guest bathrobes. I have an entire pantry with plenty of room with paper goods. Her comment freed me to think of storage on the whole-home level, and I have to tell you, it’s game changing.”
Rethinking her storage needs changed the way Jodie thought about her bathroom. “When there was so much storage, storage, storage going on, the room was very utilitarian,” she said, “but this time, when I called the bathroom remodelers in Weston, I was able to have some fun.”
Top emerging bathroom remodeling trends of 2023 include the statement bathtub, a move toward luxurious stone finishes again – terrazzo looks like it will be super hot, and there’s great enthusiasm for black rock -aka anthracite/coal – backlit mirrors, and more.
“You don’t realize how much space storage consumes until you do what I’d always thought unthinkable and start removing some storage from the space. And this prompts some important questions. Is it more important for me to have these six towels in this room, or do I want a more open, satisfying space?”
